Dr Zou is interested in the wiring, function and disorders ofneural circuits, especially in molecular and cellular mechanisms ofaxon guidance, synapse formation and regeneration in the centralnervous system. Dr Zou’s lab pioneers the finding that Wntfamily morphogens are axon guidance molecules, directing thepathfinding and topographic projection of axons along the majoraxes of the central nervous system. He is also the first to show thatplanar cell polarity and apical-basal polarity signaling pathwayssteer growth cones. In addition, Dr Zou establishes that axonguidance molecules and their signaling pathways are reactivatedin adult central nervous after traumatic injury and play importantroles in functional recovery. More recently, Dr Zou's lab finds thatplanar cell polarity signaling components play critical roles in glutamatergicsynapse formation.
